This is the most widespread vessel of transport found in Maldives. Developed and perfected over centuries to conquer the seas, the dhoni is based on the craftsmanship, ingenuity and the art of the carpenter- skills passed from one generation to the next. Steered by rudder with the helmsman’s legs, dhonis were traditionally fitted with sails, but over the last few years most have been motorized. A sail may be used to take advantage of a good breeze on longer journeys. Initially used for fishing, dhonis now also serve as dive boats, interisland transports and water taxis between Male’ and the airport.
