In a country where there is more sea than dry land, one cannot survive without sea transport. The most common form of transport is a vessel known as dhoni. These diesel engine-powered boats are the cheapest and most commonly available mode of transport in the country. For long distance trips to the outer atolls, a larger form of this vessel is used. Dhoni also come in modified states and are used for the island cruises offered by local tour operators.
